State of the Nation: “Nigeria must address anomalies in its democratic space, governance” – Sowore

Says has not delivered democracy to its people

The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has once again emphasised the need for a revolution in Nigeria, aimed at addressing the anomalies in the country’s democratic space and governance.

Sowore, who made the remark while featuring as a guest on Liberty TV programme “Democracy in Practice”, lamented that despite over two decades of civilian democracy, inequalities in the distribution of power and resources have continued to impact the people’s right to equal protection and due process. This state of affairs disproportionately affects Nigeria’s poorest people.

According to him, one reason why these inequalities are sustained lies in the country’s failure to integrate its governance democratic principles which guarantee the public’s right to know, participate in decision making and access justice.

Reacting to his being labelled in some quarters as a rebel, he said, “There’s nobody in the history of the world who is a resistant that is not labelled as something.

“Yes, I am rebellious against any operation, cultures and authorities who do not respect human rights”. He added, saying, “I prefer to be a rebel against an oppressive state than to be a citizen who accepts all kinds of rubbish”.

He also described the Judiciary as not willing to take the course of justice.
